South Africa Player of the Week: Ndumiso Mabena - Orlando Pirates

The Buccaneer's striker scored a vital goal against Zanaco FC in Zambia, which could prove to be decisive in settling Pirates' CAF Champions League tie
South Africa Player of the Week
Ndumiso Mabena
AGE 25
TEAMS Orlando Pirates
Zanaco FC
0-1 Orlando Pirates

Mabena has never been a prolific goalscorer for Orlando Pirates but his willingness to work hard on the pitch and provide the team with committed displays has meant he has become a favourite amongst coaches and fans at the Soweto Giants. The striker's goal against Zanaco FC may not have been the prettiest, but his header which rebounded off a Zanaco defender into the back of the net could prove to be vital as Pirates seek to continue their quest for continental glory. Mabena was at his hard-working best in Zambia, making sure the Buccaneer's kept hold of their lead with a display of his character and attitude towards the game. Roger de Sa has credited the brevity within his squad and Mabena may continue to be a vital cog in Pirates' CAF Champions league campaign as the tournament develops.

Congratulations to Ndumiso Mabena's 22nd South Africa Player of the Week winner!

Honourable Mention

Mohlolo Khuse- Maluti FET College

Mohlolo Khuse kept the amateur team's dreams alive for as long as possible, with several brilliant saves and forced the game into extra time. Unfortunately, he couldn't top off the performance as Maluti lost to African Warriors on penalties. However Khuse will go down as one of the best young players who has emerged from the 2013 Nedbank Cup. A bright future is ahead.

Lennox Bacela- Bloemfontein Celtic

Celtic's hitman did what he does best once again for the Siwelele, as he scored his team's winner against local rivals Free State Stars during an intense Nedbank Cup tie. Celtic will be targeting cup glory once more this term, as they soar into the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup thanks to Bacela's winner.
Thabiso Nkoana - SuperSport United

Nkoana made the perfect impact as a substitute for SuperSport during their 2-1 Nedbank cup victory against Vasco da Gama, scoring the winner with a sublime effort which kept the defending champions in the mix for cup glory once more.

Each week our team of writers will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by South Africa, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.

You can also help us choose a worthy recipient of the weekly accolade by leaving your nominations and comments. Your suggestions will be taken into consideration.

It won't necessarily be the best player in the country - at least not usually - but whoever we crown will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
