Khumalo does not make the cut into Bafana World Cup qualifier squad

Gordon Igesund announced the Bafana Bafana squad which will face the Central African Republic next weekend with a number of surprising omissions
Gordon Igesund announced South Africa's World Cup qualifier squad on Thursday for their vital clash against the Central African Republic in Cape Town next weekend.

The biggest name to be axed from the original Africa Cup of Nations squad is captain Bongani Khumalo, with Siboniso Gaxa, Thulani Serero and Katlego Mphela also missing out on the chance to help the nation on the road to qualification.

Khumalo was heavily criticised during Africa's showpiece due to a number of weak defensive performances and has struggled to find form for club side PAOK since returning from the tournament in South Africa.

Igesund has brought in a number of in-form attacking players into the squad with Daylon Claasen and Daine Klate being recalled, while former Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back Siyanda Xulu is set to enhance the defensive capabilities of Bafana Bafana.

Dino Ndlovu's recent form for Maccabi Haifa in Israel means the talented striker will have a chance to find the back of the net when Bafana kick-off in Cape Town next week.

The full squad is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Senzo Meyiwa, Wayne Sandilands

Defenders: Morgan Gould, Siyabonga Sangweni, Thabo Nthethe, Anele Ngcongca, Siyanda Xulu, Tsepo Masilela, Thabo Matlaba

Midfielders: Kagisho Dikgacoi, Dean Furman, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Oupa Mayisa, May Mahlangu, Daylon Claasen, Lerato Chabangu, Thuso Phala, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Daine Klate

Forwards: Bernard Parker, Dino Ndlovu, Tokelo Rantie
