Ndlanya predicted cautious Soweto derby draw

Former Chiefs striker Pollen Ndlanya told Goal.com that both Pirates and Chiefs had a stage to impress Gordon Igesund but failed to make a difference

Both Roger de Sa and Stuart Baxter felt that their players were under pressure in front of a world audience for the Soweto derby. The Chiefs vs Pirates clash brought back memories of Igesund's remarks when Bafana played Cape Verde in the 2013 Afcon opener.

The derby was therefore a missed opportunity for local stars to prove to Igesund that they can handle a big game. Ndlanya shares those feelings about their lost opportunity in the 0-0 draw at the National Stadium.

“This was a great opportunity for players to shine and prove their worth. I mean if you shone today there were greater chances that you might be in the coach’s good books. On the other hand if a player messes up in this game, he will be in trouble not only to the coach but to his fans. Yes, mistakes are there but for such a match, a single mistake can cost your career,” said Ndlanya.

That was perhaps why the players were so nervous. The veteran Ndlanya had predicted before the game that it would end up as a draw, when he spoke exclusively with Goal.com

“I foresee a draw. I think both coaches will be too defensive and that might prompt the

players not to attack,” he said.

As Ndlanya indicated, the Soweto derby set up a stage for players to prove their worth to Igesund. However the game wouldn't have done them any favours when the Bafana coach selects his squad for the World Cup qualifiers.
