thumbnail Hello,

Goal.com had an exclusive interview with former Chiefs captain Neil Tovey, who shares his views about the Soweto derby

Goal.com: Neil, as somebody who has been there, you have played in many Soweto derbies during your playing career. What should we expect from the Soweto derby on Saturday?

Tovey: I think it’s going to be an exciting game. For the first time in many years, Chiefs have an upper hand over Pirates. They have been consistently winning their games, and Pirates haven’t been doing well lately, so we can expect a great game.

Goal.com: Where do you think this game will be won?

Tovey: There are lot of aspects, we all know that both teams have good midfielders, but the derby needs team performers and not individuals. They need to perform as a team, and of course Pirates will have to defend better. They haven’t been defending well recently, and they will need to improve their goalscoring rate. McCarthy has been out for a while now, and that has affected them.

Goal.com: Talking about the Pirates’ defence, do you think the possible return of Siyabonga Sangweni into tomorrow’s game could make the difference?

Tovey: I don’t think Sangweni can do much, because he clearly lacks match fitness, and been rushed into the game of this magnitude could be a problem, but the technical team know what to expect from him, as he’s been a key figure in the Pirates team, but he’s not fully fit.

Goal.com: Say Chiefs win against Pirates on Saturday, should we perhaps conclude that the title race is over?

Tovey: I’d kind of say that, because Pirates are still going to play against tougher opponents including Sundowns. So yes, Pirates can say goodbye to the title if they lose on Saturday, and again playing in the Caf champions league is also demanding, because they doing a lot of travelling.

Goal.com: Let’s talk about the level of confidence in Chiefs players knowing that they are on top, and the results against Pirates won’t affect their position.

Tovey: They are professional players, and they cannot afford to be over confident. They know what is at stake.

Goal.com: And finally Neil, what’s your predictions for the Soweto derby?

Tovey: I think Chiefs will win by an odd goal.
