Joseph Mafokeng and Zukisa Ginya's goals inspired Tembu Royals to a 2-1 victory over AmaZulu in the Nedbank Cup at King Zwelithini Stadium
As promised AmaZulu coach Craig Rosslee started with fringe players like goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela, Bongani Ndulula, Joseph Malongoane and Phumlani Mhamha. Marc van Heerden also made his comeback to the side after an injury which saw him missing two PSL matches.
In the first five minutes it was Joseph Malongoane who seemed to be giving the visitors a hard time as he was beating the defenders like it was nobodies business.
In the 15th minute a poor clearance of the ball nearly saw Royals recording the first goal in this match. A shot that came in from Vuyani Nojiya was saved by Mbongeni Mzimela who had to make a full stretch on his left.
Tembu had another opportunity to score in the 20th minute, when Vuyisa Gebeda was left alone to enter the box, but he was soon stopped by Stanley Kgatla as he tried to strike for a goal.
In the 23th minute their hard effort was rewarded when Joseph Mafokeng struck a beautiful shot outside the box that hit underneath the crossbar to beat Nzimela, to take them to a 1-0 lead.
AmaZulu just never got their momentum together after that goal, as they were conceding silly mistakes that nearly saw the team being punished by Nojiya. Despite all that Malongoane never lost spirit to press on.
Immediately in the second half, Royals pressed on and Thobile Mkize struck a shot that was saved by Mzimela . A minute after that, Royals scored their second goal from a cross that came in from Mkize and was headed in by Zukisa Ginya which saw his team leading 2-0.
Substitute Madondo provided a beautiful cross inside the box to Mhamha who failed to connect. In the 59thminute Malongoane came between the Royals defenders to score his first goal for AmaZulu, with a powerful strike that hit the right post and went into the net.
The goal brought back the fire and sparkle in the AmaZulu players. Another goal for AmaZulu nearly came when Malongoane played a ball to Ndulula who dribbled inside the box and crossed it to Madondo who hit a bicycle kick that was unfortunate to hit the cross bar. Even after than AmaZulu dominated the match showing much aggressiveness and will to win.
In the last six minutes Royals keeper Langeni Gogo made a great save from Bhengu’s header that had came in from Van Heerden’s cross.
In the dying minutes of the match, AmaZulu had their final chance to equalize from a cross that had came in from Malongoane but Manqana couldn’t reach it.
