Ajax confirm former Man City striker Benjani in Cape Town

Former Manchester City striker Benjamin “Benjani” Mwaruwari has surfaced in Cape Town, and will be training with the Urban Warriors, reportedly interested in a move

Ajax Cape Town have confirmed that former Manchester City and Portsmouth striker Benjamin Mwaruwari, affectionately known as Benjani, is currently training with them.

Although the Urban Warriors could not reveal any further information about Benjani’s stay in Cape Town, it is believed that they are looking to bring the former Zimbabwe international on board, to help them move up the table with 11 league games remaining.

“Benjani Mwaruwari (Benjani) arrived in Cape Town over the weekend, and is currently training at Ikamva,” reads a statement on Ajax Cape Town’s official website.

Benjani, a former Jomo Cosmos marksman in the South African PSL, is eligible to sign with any team despite the closing of the transfer window back in January. He is still a free agent, after leaving English club Portsmouth at the beginning of 2012.

The striker started his professional career with Jomo Cosmos back in 1999, and has won 31 caps with the Zimbabwe national team between 1999 and 2010, when he decided to retire from international football, and focus on his club career.
