Goal.com had an exclusive interview with Safa president Kirsten Nematandani, who confirmed that Gordon Igesund will remain Bafana coach after penalties heartache
Nematandani said that Igesund remains the only suitable man to guide Bafana Bafana to the 2014 World Cup because he was given two mandates.
“Gordon had two mandates, to guide the team to the semifinals of Afcon and also to make sure that we qualify for the 2014 Fifa World Cup,” said Nematandani.
“Gordon was told to achieve at least one of the two mandates, but there is no harm in achieving both,” he said.
The Safa president though highlighted the performance of the team as a key consideration to Gordon Igesund’s future as a Bafana coach.
However, Nematandani did not want to be clear and specific on whether Igesund will still keep his job should he fail to achieve the second mandate, even if the association is impressed with the team’s performance.
“I will not want to speculate on that. We will cross that bridge when we get there, but I believe true South Africans have seen what Gordon has done since he was appointed,” said Nematandani.
