The Platinum Stars winger silenced his doubters with a man-of-the-match performance against Norway, followed by an equally impressive display against Algeria

Thuso Phala was described as a surprise selection in the Bafana Bafana squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, with the likes of Sifiso Myeni and Daine Klate impressing out wide this season for Orlando Pirates. But the Platinum Stars winger has been the premier performer for the national side during their preparations for the tournament with an outstanding performance against Norway and a solid and committed outing against Algeria. Phala's menacing pace, crossing ability and scoring form has inspired his club side this season and he has brought all of these attributes into the national squad. Against Norway, Phala was a force to be reckoned with, as his bursts of pace left his markers trailing in his wake. He was a breath of fresh air during a rather dreary performance by the majority of the South African outift. Unfortunately he could not stave off a defeat for the home side, but his critics and doubters were silenced by his impact on proceedings. Algeria proved a sterner test of the right wingers ability and even though he struggled to find as much space against the Desert Foxes, Phala was committed throughout, showing Gordon Igesund and the nation that he his worthy of his spot as South Africa's first-choice right winger.

Congratulations to Thuso Phala,'s 14th South Africa Player of the Week winner!

Honourable Mention

Thabo Matlaba– South Africa

Matlaba put in a man-of-the-match performance against Algeria and was a constant threat down the left wing, linking up with Simphiwe Tshabalala and Thulani Serero during the clash against the Desert Foxes. Matlaba will hope to keep his spot as Bafana Bafana's first-choice left-back, but he faces stiff competition against Tsepo Masilela for the position.

Thulani Serero - South Africa

South Africa's creative spark impressed with some lung-bursting runs and dribbling skills during both friendlies this week, displaying his continued worth to the side. Serero will look to take his game to the next level during the Afcon as he comes closer to full fitness. Hailed as SA's "Messi" by Gordon Igesund, the Ajax attacking midfielder will want to show South Africa his potential.
Bongani Khumalo– South Africa

South Africa's captain may have been guilty in not closing down Elyounoussi during his side's loss against Norway, but his performance against a talented Algerian outfit was world-class. Khumalo is South Africa's most talented defender and he was imperious against the Desert Foxes and marshalled his side well from the back.

Each week our team of writers will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by South Africa, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.

You can also help us choose a worthy recipient of the weekly accolade by leaving your nominations and comments. Your suggestions will be taken into consideration.

It won't necessarily be the best player in the country - at least not usually - but whoever we crown will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
