Bafana Bafana defender Siboniso Gaxa told that even though he knew he stood a chance of being in the final 23-man squad, he did not take it for granted South Africa spoke to Gaxa who was clearly overjoyed to participate in the upcoming 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. The Kaizer Chiefs defender's hopes were raised after being involved in the training camps with coach Gordon Igesund.

“Honestly speaking, my selection came as a surprise or rather a blessing should I say. Everyone who was in the camp wanted (to be selected) so bad to be in the final squad. Fortunately I was one of those chosen,” he told South Africa.

The KwaZulu-Natal born player said he is really looking forward to playing in front of his home fans since the national team is based in Durban.

“It is always great to play at home because you get all the moral support, which you need not only from your fans but also from your family members and close friends who are able to come and witness you play,” he said.

Some of the fellow KwaZulu-Natal players that are expected to take advantage of the home ground advantage in Durban include goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

It is customary that in such tournaments players will go all out trying to make a name for themselves on the international scene.  Gaxa said although he knows that this will be a great opportunity for him to showcase his talent, his focus will be on the Afcon and the team.

“Off course this is a great platform and there are a lot of things that I want to achieve in my football career but the focus is on ensuring that our team does well. My focus on this tournament will be the national team and becoming the best team player. If anything else comes during the tournament, that will be a bonus,” said Gaxa.
