thumbnail Hello,

Klate enjoyed a fine week with an immaculate free-kick which inspired an Orlando Pirates victory over Golden Arrows. followed by a solid performance for the national side

South Africa Player of the Week
Daine Klate
AGE 27
POSITION Midfielder
TEAMS Orlando Pirates, South Africa
Golden Arrows
0-2 Orlando Pirates
South Africa 3-1 Malawi

Daine Klate had a stellar final outing for Orlando Pirates before the mid-season break, as he not only scored a vital free-kick against Golden Arrows, but was threatening throughout the 90 minutes in Durban. Klate has scored some sublime free-kicks during his career and his strike against Arrows was no different as he curled an effort over the wall and sent Pirates into a 1-0 lead, which they capitalised on and eventually turned out 2-0 winners in Durban. Gordon Igesund must have spotted Klate's recent form and gave the attacking midfielder a chance to shine for the national side and this he did with a fine second half performance for Bafana Bafana against Malawi. He combined well with the pace of Tokelo Rantie and May Mahlangu which helped finish off a stoical Malawian outfit. Klate will hope to earn a berth in the national set-up for the Africa Cup of Nations and his techinal ability combined with his vision and movement down the left-wing should guarantee his spot in the final 23-man squad.

Congratulations to Daine Klate,'s 13th South Africa Player of the Week winner!

Honourable Mention

Lehlonolho Majoro– Kaizer Chiefs, South Africa

Majoro was at his best for Chiefs in their final league outing before the mid-season break, but was unlucky not to score after hitting the post against AmaZulu during a routine victory. However, he did not miss for South Africa and certainly looked worth his spot in the national side, displaying some great movement and providing the finishing touch to put Bafana Bafana into an early lead.

Katlego Mashego- Moroka Swallows

With Zeca Marques' job on the line, Mashego was on hand to seal an impressive 2-0 win over in-form Platinum Stars. His close range strike may not have been a brillaint piece of football but the moment may have saved his coach's job and provides the Dube Birds with a vital 3 points which had been eluding them for a while.
Franklin Cale– SuperSport United

SuperSport United seemed destined to end the first half of the season with a draw, an all too familiar sight for Gavin Hunt's charges. But it was not to be as Franklin Cale won the game for Matatsantza with an 88th minute strike, ending the season on a positive note.

Each week our team of writers will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by South Africa, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.

It won't necessarily be the best player in the country - at least not usually - but whoever we crown will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
