thumbnail Hello,

The towering Chiefs centre-back put in a powerful defensive display against Orlando Pirates and was one of the standout performers during the Soweto Derby

South Africa Player of the Week
Eric Mathoho
AGE 22
TEAM Kaizer Chiefs
Orlando Pirates
1-1 Kaizer Chiefs

Eric Mathoho's decision to snub Mamelodi Sundowns and join Kaizer Chiefs is certainly paying dividends for the 22-year-old who is developing into one of the most solid defenders gracing the pitches of the PSL. Mathoho's stature in the game is certainly growing, as he has been compared to South African great Lucas Radebe due to his strength and imposing height. Even though Mathoho could not stop Collins Mbesuma from opening the scoring, he was immaculate throughout the Soweto Derby, building on his already successful partnership with Tefu Mashamaite. With Morgan Gould recovering from injury, Chiefs will have a tough decision to make as Mathoho and Mashamaite have only conceded 10 goals this season. Mathoho has already made his name known in the Bafana Bafana side and will hope his game continues to develop. He could become one of the most powerful central defenders in South Africa, as he holds all the attributes to succeed.

Congratulations to Eric Mathoho ,'s 10th South Africa Player of the Week winner!

Honourable Mention

Katlego Mphela– Mamelodi Sundowns

Mphela returned from injury with a bang, scoring Sundowns' winner against Black Leopards with a powerful header. He moves onto 44 goals for the Brazilians, second on the list of all-time scorers for the club. Mphela did not look off the pace throughout his time on the pitch and will certainly be an option for Gordon Igesund for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Henrico Botes- Platinum Stars

During a remarkable 6-4 win for Platinum Stars, Botes scored two of the goals and was part of a team which had to resort to two late strikes in order to seal a classic win which continues their fine form and moves them equal on points with Orlando Pirates. Cavin Johnson's side has proven to be a revelation this season.
Lehlonolo Majoro– Kaizer Chiefs

Majoro scored once again in a Soweto Derby with an impeccable finish which meant Chiefs were able to secure a draw against their rivals and stay on top of the PSL standings. During a game which shifted momentum countless times, Majoro was on hand to turn a period of Chiefs' domination into a well-taken goal.

Each week our team of writers will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by South Africa, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.

You can also help us choose a worthy recipient of the weekly accolade by leaving your nominations and comments. Your suggestions will be taken into consideration.

It won't necessarily be the best player in the country - at least not usually - but whoever we crown will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
