thumbnail Hello,

Thabo Matlaba's superlative strike against Bidvest Wits is a certain candidate for goal of the season as the left-back continues to display his talents this campaign

South Africa Player of the Week
Thabo Matlaba
AGE 24
TEAM Orlando Pirates
Black Leopards
0-4 Orlando Pirates
Orlando Pirates 2-0 BidvestWits

Thabo Matlaba’s recent performances for Orlando Pirates have seen the left-back display his talent and his 35-yard screamer against Bidvest Wits on Saturday proves that the player has something special to offer the Buccaneers. Matlaba showed his defensive and offensive capabilities against Wits, with some strong attacking runs from defence and producing one of the best long range goals of the season. Matlaba has been known for his versatility and can play in both the mid-field and defence, which means he offers Roger de Sa options. As Pirates continue their assault on Chief's position at the top of the log, Matlaba will be confident that he can hold onto his position at left-back and score more important goals for the Buccaneers. His next game could not be a greater stage to perform, as Pirates face Chiefs in the Soweto derby on the 8th of December. Matlaba will also be hoping his fantastic form will earn him some attention in the international arena as Bafana Bafana search for players who can inspire them during the Africa Cup of Nations.

Congratulations to Thabo Matlaba ,'s 8th South Africa Player of the Week winner!

Honourable Mention

Richard Henyekane– Mamelodi Sundowns

An inspirational performance from Henyekane helped Sudowns break their winless streak as the striker showed pace, great control in possession and scored the vital goal with a superb piece of control and an accurate finish. His strike helped Sundowns to rise from the foot of the PSL table to 15th position.

Mogakolodi Ngele - Platinum Stars

A fantastic strike from Ngele helped Platinum Stars end Kaizer Chiefs unbeaten run. Ngele was threatening throughout his sublime performance and continues Platinum Stars' good form as Calvin Johnson's side move closer to the top end of the table.

Larry Cohen– Chippa United

Two outstanding goals in a week for the former Jomo Cosmos defender showed the value of moving Cihen into the midfield. His 30-yard effort earned Chippa United a victory against Platinum Stars and his well-placed volley against city rivals Ajax Cape Town put his side into the lead during theor 3-2 loss.

Each week our team of writers will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by South Africa, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.

You can also help us choose a worthy recipient of the weekly accolade by leaving your nominations and comments. Your suggestions will be taken into consideration.

It won't necessarily be the best player in the country - at least not usually - but whoever we crown will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
