DR Congo could be the country to come to Bafana Bafana’s rescue next month as they seek an opponent for a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations warm-up match just before Christmas
The South African Football Association (SAFA) have penciled in a match in Durban on December 22 to get the final preparations for the tournament underway.
But they have been waiting to see which of the other 15 finalist of the 2013 Afcon might be camping in the country at the time to offer them a game.
To date, only the Congolese have announced they will be holding a pre-Nations Cup in South Africa before the New Year, in Port Elizabeth from December 8-18.
‘The Leopards’ are therefore likely be asked to stay on and take on Bafana Bafana in Durban.
Otherwise SAFA will be forced to look around the country’s neighbours for a possible opponent but whether they will find any takers so close to Christmas remains to be seen.
SAFA chief executive officer Robin Petersen said he has a back-up plan but gave no further details.
Bafana Bafana will have a total of three warm-up matches before the finals kick off on January 19 with a match against the Cape Verde Islands at Soccer City in Johannesburg.Bafana play Norway in Cape Town on January 8 and Algeria in Gauteng on January 12.
