Orlando Pirates duo Oupa Manyisa and Siyabonga Sangweni pull out of squadBoth Oupa Manyisa and Siyabonga Sangweni have been withdrawn from the South African squad for Wednesday’s international against Zambia at Johannesburg’s Soccer City.
The Orlando Pirates pair picked up injuries on Saturday when their club beat Free State Stars 1-0 in the Premier Soccer League.
Manyisa was stretchered off late in the game after suffering a reoccurrence of a hamstring problem that has bothered him all week while Sangweni did not even make the kick off because of a knee problem.
Sangweni hurt himself in the warm-up ahead of the game and had to be hastily removed from the team sheet.
He had been hurt last Wednesday when Pirates won away at Mamelodi Sundowns but recovered significantly in the build-up to Saturday’s game to be included, only to suffer a further setback.
The South African Football Association said on Monday that Kaizer Chiefs fullback Siboniso Gaxa was being called-up as cover.
The same happened to Gaxa before coach Gordon Igesund’s first assignment in Brazil in August, when he was brought in as a late replacement.
But Manyisa will not be replaced because “the coach believes he has enough cover in the midfield,” a SAFA spokesman said.
Wednesday’s match is preparation for both countries as they look ahead to the Africa Cup of Nations finals, which South Africa host from January 19 to February 10.
