De Sa: Senzo Meyiwa to stay in goal for Orlando Pirates
League champions stick with new goalkeeper after Josephs gets heave-ho from coach
Roger de Sa will stick with Senzo Meyiwa in goal for Saturday’s Premier Soccer League match against Black Leopards after dropping long standing first choice Moeneeb Josephs.
Meyiwa was a surprise choice for the midweek win away over Mamelodi Sundowns and despite a jittery start emerged with much plaudits from a bruising encounter, where he was cut on the face.
De Sa said he would stick by the 25-year-old Meyiwa: “I always select on what I see in training and Senzo has been outstanding at training.
“Moeneeb hasn’t been at his best for a few weeks now and it was only right that I gave the youngster a chance.”
De Sa, a former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, said he felt Meyiwa was also better at handling crosses, although both him and Josephs are diminutive.
“He’s a real character, he’s got a big heart, he’s pushed Moeneeb in training. If Senzo is fit he will play on Saturday.”
Second placed Pirates host Free State Stars in their 10th league game of the season, seeking to keep up the pressure on league leaders Kaizer Chiefs.
Josephs was effectively dropped after Pirates let in two goals in the last five minutes against Bloemfontein Celtic last Sunday in the second round of the Telkom Knockout. The holders went from 3-1 up with just minutes to play to being forced into extra time and then to having to decide the match in a penalty shootout, which Celtic won.Related Stories
