Bafana coach Gordon Igesund names his squad for Zambia friendly

Igesund leaves out Ayanda Patosi, but recalls some familiar old names
Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has named his squad for the international friendly against Zambia on November 14.

The big news was who was not selected, youngster Ayanda Patosi has been left out despite being one of the top performers in Belgium this season with Lokeren.

His omission is a surprise, given that Igesund is likely to be missing Steven Pienaar and Thulani Serero for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Igesund has also continued to rotate his goalkeepers, bringing in Belgian-based Darren Keet, and dropping Moeneeb Josephs and Wayne Sandilands from the squad. Itumeleng Khune from Kaizer Chiefs will be second keeper in the squad.

Anele Ngcongca, who plays for Genk, has been recalled after missing the first four matches of Igesund’s reign and can cover a number of positions having turned out at right-back, centre-back and in a holding midfield role.

Also back is Lamontville Golden Arrows’ Thanduyise Khuboni, while a surprise call-up comes in the form of Platinum Stars winger Thuso Phala.

Up-front, Moroka Swallows’ Katlego Mashego is back after playing his last Bafana match against North Korea ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, while Kermit Erasmus gets a recall from SuperSport United.

Igesund says that this squad shows his desire to look at as many players as possible, and that the door is closed to no-one.

“I have said all along that I want to look at as many players as possible and we will continue to do that,” the coach says. “We also have guys who are coming back from injury, Benni McCarthy, Katlego Mphela, Thulani Serero, Davide Somma, to name a few.

“All of these players are still in contention but they have to prove their fitness and they are in a race against time.”

South Africa take on African champions Zambia in the Nelson Mandela Challenge at Soccer City on November 14.
