Oldham coach Paul Dickov says Bafana Bafana have back-tracked on Dean Furman “leeway”
Oldham Athletic coach Paul Dickov has hit out at Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund after he insisted that Latics skipper Dean Furman play against Poland tonight.
Oldham have an English League One fixture against Sheffield United on Saturday, but will be without their influential skipper who instead is likely to start for South Africa in Warsaw this evening.
As the game is being played on a FIFA international weekend, Oldham were duty-bound to release their star man, but Dickov said Furman’s selection goes against a tenuous understanding he felt he had with Igesund over the player.
"On a personal note, I'm delighted for Dean," Dickov said. "He's a model pro. He's somebody who, whether it's on the training ground, a Saturday afternoon, a Tuesday night or just around the football club has a fantastic attitude and he deserves all the success he can get.
"From a footballing point of view, we want him here and playing in the team. When I first spoke to the South African FA about Dean they had hinted that, with Dean being our captain and us having a small squad, there would be a little bit of leeway if it was for friendlies.
"So it's slightly disappointing because we'd asked if Dean could miss their game against Poland and play for us, and then travel out for the second game. But they wanted him there for both games and that's their prerogative – they want all their better players and the way Dean has played for them they count him as one of them."
After a difficult start to the season, Oldham have won their last two games and now come up against unbeaten Sheffield United.
Furman made his Bafana Bafana debut against Brazil last month and then won the Man of the Match award in the home win over Mozambique a few days later.
