Newly signed veteran is proving the heart beat at Platinum Stars
Benson Mhlongo’s input into the Platinum Stars line-up this season has been critical and could go on to help the team to achieve this season, said coach Cavin Johnson.
The former Bafana Bafana regular, blighted by injury over the last two weeks, moved to Stars on a free transfer at the beginning of the season and has made an almost immediate impact.
At the weekend he was again named man of the match for a stellar performance, prompting his coach to joke that Mhlongo should now start to share the awards with his younger team mates so that they can begin to gain in confidence.
“It is not a surprise he won the award, Benson plays like that every week in and out,” said Johnson, whose side upset Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday night to move into a top eight place in the Premier Soccer League standings.
“I think the award should have gone to Joseph Molangoane,” added a candid-speaking coach.
“Benson is a seasoned professional, you expect Benson to play like that. But you don’t expect Luvo Mpeta to play like he played. You do not expect Molangoane to play like he is playing. Benson is a long time professional and so he’ll always get those accolades but you need to promote the young players in the team. Benson’s got enough man of the match awards!”
