Josephs moves to magical 350-mark

Orlando Pirates goalkeeper now second on list of active players with most starts
Moeneeb Josephs celebrated his 350th start in the Premier Soccer League on Sunday as Orlando Pirates moved second in the standings with a 3-1 away win over Pretoria University.

It inches him closer to becoming the player with the most number of appearances among those active in the Premier Soccer League.

He is inching closer to the 376 games that Mamelodi Sundowns’ back-up goalkeeper Calvin Marlin has played in his career.

Josephs, who debuted for Cape Town Spurs in September 1997, is now in his 14th season in the Premier Soccer League.

Of the current crop of players, Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi is also past 300. He has now made 343 starts in all competitions during his career with the Buccaneers and his previous club Ria Stars.

The record for the most number of matches in South African professional football is held by Edries Burton. He finished his career with 592 league and cup starts for Santos, Cape Town Spurs and AmaZulu in a professional career spanning 17 seasons.

Second on the list is ex-Bafana Bafana skipper Neil Tovey, who finished his career with 519 league and cup starts in the pre-Premier Soccer League era.
