The former Bafana Bafana midfielder, who was part of the national side that lifted the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, has been reunited with his old boss after a fallout with the management at Wits.
Tinkler had expected to land the head coach job when De Sa was released by Wits at the end of last season, and was unhappy when the Spaniard Antonio Habas was brought in instead.
"I can confirm that Eric is joining us as an assistant coach, I was approached by the head coach [De Sa] that he would like to work with Eric,” Pirates owner Irvin Khoza says. “I immediately spoke to [Wits chairman] Brian Joffe, he agreed to release Eric to come and join Pirates with immediate effect.
“We have a solid working relationship with Wits, which goes a long way. I would like to thank Mr Joffe for the gesture.”The move to Pirates has come as no real surprise. Current assistant coach Tebogo Moloi will remain in his role, working alongside Tinkler to help De Sa.
