Maritzburg United Seeks Consistency

The Pietermaritzburg-based team wants to maintain their early season form against Free State Stars, a side which they have failed to beat in ten attempts

A shock 3-1 victory against Mamelodi Sundowns was all it took for Maritzburg United to be considered as an emerging force in the PSL this season. Their impressive start has underlined their hard work during the pre-season, a major factor in the team’s excellent form on the pitch.

However the Team of Choice are hoping to maintain their standards against high flying Free State Stars this weekend, a side which has dominated Maritzburg United in previous encounters.

The Pietermaritzburg outfit will face Free State Stars at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening and the match will prove to be a test of the teams early season form. Placed second on the league table close behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg United face a team which has also had a storming start to the season.

Free State Stars are unbeaten after an impressive 0-0 draw with Chiefs in their last outing. The side will be buoyed by their recent record against Maritzburg United after doing the double against them last season.

Maritzburg United defender Rubin Cloete spoke to the team’s official website regarding their unbeaten start to the season. New signing Cloete has been an important catalyst in the team’s solid start to the season and he is resolute about the team’s ability to continue winning.

“It has been a great start for us, one can’t deny that. But the sign of a really good team is consistency, so that’s what we are chasing”, said Cloete.

“But we have a good squad. The players believe in themselves, in each other. We believe in the coach and he believes in us, so there is reason to be optimistic and feel that we are going to have a good season.”

Maritzburg United’s performances have been a result of their team cohesion and fitness according to experienced signing Delron Buckley, who also spoke to the team’s website regarding his expectations for the season.

“The squad has gelled well together. This is a result of our hard work during seven weeks of pre-season preparation. We did a lot of running, a lot of ball work, and we got to know each other’s games,” said Buckley.

“The players are aware though that we need to remain grounded and to continue to work hard. We need to keep our discipline, and we know what our strong points and our weak points are.”

The Team of Choice have proven their mettle in the early period of this season. However Friday’s home game against a team which has proven to be their “jinx” side in previous matches, will highlight how strong their form truly is.
