Teenager Hoffman stays in goal for Wits

Goalkeeper crisis continues at PSL side with trio sidelined

Bidvest Wits still have three goalkeepers on the injury list and will again have untested teenager Steven Hoffman in goal when they take on Chippa United in the Premier Soccer League at the weekend.

The Under-20 international has kept goal for the last two matches in place of the injured Emile Baron, who frustrating officials with a myriad of complaints and niggles, and remains sidelined for an undetermined period.

Hoffman would ordinarily be the fourth choice for Wits but the other two goalkeepers in the first team squad are also out with injury.

Ryan Harrison, signed from relegated Santos at the start of the season, and is expected to only return next month. A knee injury has Jackson Mabokgwane sidelined until at least next week, according to club chief executive officer Jose Ferreira.

It means academy player Jethren Barr, who is just 17, will again sit on the bench for Wits as cover for Hoffman. Hoffman kept a clean sheet in Wits’ last league game against Bloemfontein Celtic but conceded two goals on his debut against Black Leopards.

Baron played in the first game of the season for Wits – a 2-0 away loss to Free State Stars.
