thumbnail Hello,

Today Orlando Pirates forward Benni McCarthy will find out how long he will be out of action when he undergoes a scan on his hamstring injury

McCarthy was stretchered off in Bafana Bafana’s 1-0 loss to Brazil in Sao Paulo on Friday night, lasting just 11 minutes of his international comeback after he himself had come on for the injured Dino Ndlovu.

“I’m back home from Brazil and going for a scan tomorrow, to see how bad my injury is,” McCarthy said on Sunday. “I’m a bit scared because I don't want it to be bad news."

The Bafana medical team have already estimated that he will face six weeks on the sidelines, which would be a serious blow to an already depleted Pirates frontline.

The Buccaneers have failed to replace last season’s sensation Tokelo Rantie, who has joined Malmo in Sweden, while the inconsistent Ndumiso Mabena is just coming back from an injury himself.

Zambian hitman Collins Mbesuma has looked short of match fitness since he joined from Lamontville Golden Arrows last month and the Zimbabwean striker Takesure Chinyama has yet to make his PSL debut.

National Under-23 forward Bongani Ndulula has made a couple of substitute appearances so far this campaign but has never been a regular goalscorer.

It could mean that coach Augusto Palacios uses either of the more experienced duo, Thulasizwe Mbuyane or Rudolph Bester, alongside one of Mbesuma or Chinyama for the Absa Premiership clash with Platinum Stars in Rustenburg on Saturday.

Pirates have battled to find the net as it is this season, having now gone 372 minutes (six hours, 12 minutes) without a goal in all competitions.
