The 55-year-old former Morocco international returns to coach the outfit he led to the final of the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has named former international goalkeeper Badou Zaki as coach of the national team.

The 55-year-old, who led the Lions of the Atlas to the final of the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations against Tunisia, was presented to the press on Friday in Rabat.

He has been tasked with building a competitive team ahead of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Morocco.

His appointment took many by surprise as Italian Giovanni Trapattoni and Dutchman Dick Advocaat were ahead in the final list of candidates, according to local reports.

Hassan Benabicha of the U20 team had been serving as caretaker coach since November 2013 following the sacking of Rachid Taoussi.

Zaki had spent three years, 2002-2005, at the helm of the Lions before joining Kawkab Marrakech and subsequently Wydad Casablanca.
