Goal.com writer Ernest Makhaya was at the 2013 Afcon final at the National Stadium in Johannesburg. He shares his spirited experience with the fans
I was impressed with the outfits worn by our fans, as every fan wore a jersey of his beloved nation. The stadium was mainly coloured in green. I was not surprised seeing Bafana Bafana replicas here and there. The whole stadium demonstrated to the whole world how we celebrate Africa. This was a great experience!
Our nation has to be proud with the vibe it created from the beginning until the end of the tournament. Who doubted the ability of South Africa hosting another football tournament successfully? This tournament will remain in the hearts and minds of Africans, especially the closing ceremony. We sang with one voice on Sunday and indeed celebrated Africa.
Then the moment of truth arrived when the two nations – Nigeria and Burkina Faso – took the centre stage. I wont recount the game on the field as you've already read about this on Goal.com. Eventually Nigeria were crowned African football champions after 19 years of waiting. Happiness was written all over the faces of Nigerian fans. I would like to believe that they clinched the 29th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in style. It took the man who wears jersey number 19, Sunday Mba to end a 19-year-silverware drought on a Sunday. His part in destiny should mean everything to the Nigerians back home.
