Nigeria are through to the semifinals of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations after ousting Ivory Coast 2-1 in a quarterfinal match played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday.
Emmanuel Emenike, who once played for South African side Mpumalanga Black Aces, opened the scoring with a scorcher to put Nigeria in the lead just before half-time.
Emenike has told Goal.com that Nigeria can go all the way to the final, now that they have beaten the tournament’s favourites Ivory Coast.
“We beat the team that everyone was talking about and I think we will make it to the final this year,” said Emenike.
The former Fenerbahce striker, though, appealed to his teammates not to underestimate Mali when the two sides meet in the semifinals.
“We will be making a big mistake if we take Mali for granted. We need to give them the respect that they deserve, because they fought hard to reach the semifinals,” he said.
The Nigerian striker Emenike, has now scored three goals in the 2013 Afcon tournament but he told Goal.com that he is not looking for personal glory, but to help Nigeria lift the trophy for the first time in 19 years.
“I want to score as many goals as possible to help Nigeria win the trophy. Getting a top scorer award will be a bonus because I am representing Nigeria and not myself,” added Emenike.
