Marques: Bafana players have grown psychologically

Moroka Swallows coach Zeca Marques worked with Gordon Igesund at the club. We speak to him about the Igesund effect You have worked with Gordon at Moroka Swallows, you guys managed to take Swallows from the bottom of the log to second spot in the following season. How do you think he will approach the Mali game on Saturday?

Marques: Gordon is a wise coach when it comes to these type of matches. He understands what the opposition does, what their strengths and weaknesses are, as well as the psychological impact of the individuals. He researches everyone and based on that, he will find a way to dissect and breakdown the opposition. I believe you have been watching a lot of Afcon games, especially Mali and Ghana. Do you think that Bafana is capable of beating Mali on Saturday?

Marques: I think we will beat Mali. I think Bafana Bafana have grown tremendously on a psychological level, which was previously one of our weaknesses. Knowing Gordon and our opponents, I think he will give the players confidence to try and outsmart the opposition, and not to fear. Some football experts believe that Gordon Igesund didn’t get enough time to prepare for the Mali clash as he did when preparing for the group stages. Do you think that could have a negative effect on his team’s chances?

Marques: Not at all. I think Gordon would have realized our options. It was either going to be Mali or Ghana. He would have a dossier on Mali and he would have a dossier on Ghana, but now that Mali has come out, he definitely has information on them.
