It is high time South African football turn the corner and show other nations what we can produce. I have a feeling that we will finish top of Group A despite being the lowest ranked team in that group (85) because to me that is just a number. For the first time in many years, I am anticipating an exciting tournament for Bafana Bafana in terms of succeeding.
Although it has been announced that all the tickets for the opening game have been sold out, in Johannesburg you can't compare it to the 2010 World Cup campaign when you consider the 2013 Afcon logo is only known by those who seem to have faith that Bafana will do well. However I believe the fans imaginations will be captured when Bafana progress to the next stage of the tournament.
Having seen the vibe in Rustenburg, it seems as if we are living in two different countries due to the heightened anticipation there. Soccer loving fans are expecting mouth-watering encounters in the city rich in platinum. I hope that these fans are not only excited about the Afcon but that they have bought their tickets to go and watch these games.
Zambia lifted the trophy when no one expected them to and our fans in Rustenburg believe that Bafana Bafana can surprise the world and win the tournament on home soil. It must be said that playing on home doesn’t guarantee positive results but it guarantees full support from the fans. Hence our South African fans should focus on inspiring.
Since the facilities and infrastructure is ready; all the North West people want is for the tournament to start. I heard the majority of the Rustenburg-based fans singing the 2013 Afcon slogan – “The beat at Africa’s feet” and I was amazed with excitement.
I am appealing to the nation to go out there and support their beloved teams that are taking part in this year’s tournament which is also the 29th edition of Afcon; and forget about who should and who shouldn’t be in the squad because coaches know best. By doing that, everyone will definitely feel the beat at Africa’s feet throughout the tournament.
