With five days to go before the 2013 Afcon, member of the LOC Alpha Mchunu has assured Goal.com South Africa that the referees will be honest during the tournamentAlpha Mchunu, who is a member of the Local Organising committee said the nation should not worry about the officiating because they would be of a high standard.“The referees selected to officiate the games are all chosen by Caf, and I am sure that they are not involved in anything that might put the game in dispute," said Mchunu.
He said that the Caf independent body deals with the appointment of referees.
“People need to understand that all the referees were selected by an independent body and there were certain selection procedures which were followed. What happened in 2010 must not be an excuse for poor performance. All the referees are expected to remain loyal during the duration of these games.
Though, there is only one referee (Bennett Daniel Frazer) from South Africa selected to officiate the matches and one assistant (Siwela Zakhele Thusi)," said Mchunu.
“The fact that we are hosting the event does not necessarily mean that we need to have more referees in the tournament. You need to understand that referees are invited to do training by Caf and from there decisions are taken,” he said.
He said as Safa they are proud of the progress that they have made as there are many South African referees who are now Fifa accredited.
“I think we will only start being worried once our referees are failing the test, but as long as they are invited and passing, everything is on track. We need to be behind them and show support in all their decisions,” said Mchunu.
