Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has told Goal.com that Moeneeb Josephs played an influential role in his football career and he owes him for all the support and guidance that he has given him.
“Moeneeb is like a brother to me and I am very grateful to have him in my life. He has great knowledge about the game since he has been there for some time. He has really guided me with a lot of things at club level and he was not afraid of giving me advice,” said Meyiwa.
The Durban born player is among the chosen 23-man squad of players that will represent Bafana Bafana in the Afcon tournament which is due to take place this month. Meyiwa said the mood in the camp is really great.
''The environment is good, everyone is working hard but more importantly there is that vibe and team work going on. I have learnt a lot of things particularly preparing for such a prestigious event,” he said.
Meyiwa also said that training with the Bafana number one goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is a dream come true for him.
''This is our childhood dream and it feels good to see it coming true. Khune is a great friend of mine and he is also playing an important role in helping me to stay calm.''
“He (Khune) recently told me to stay relaxed and that nothing is new, but the football is still round shaped. He said the only difference is the environment but I must just stay calm and focused and never forget to enjoy myself,” he said.
The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper also said that he is very privileged to get such an opportunity and that with belief and faith, nothing is impossible.
“The journey has never been easy, and yes there were times when I felt like giving up but I am grateful to God because I didn’t. My goal now is to learn as much as I can and also enjoy the fruits of my hard work,” added Meyiwa.
Although he is selected as a number three goalkeeper, Meyiwa says that even if he doesn’t play a single game during the Afcon, he knows that the experience he gained at the camp will benefit him into becoming a better player for his club.
“With no doubt I am going to use this experience to sustain my position at Pirates as a number one goalkeeper and hopefully win the cup with the club,” he said.
