Malawi coach Kinnah Phiri says he backs South Africa to win the upcoming 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, after Bafana beat his team on Saturday
Kinnah Phiri, who previously worked in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League with Free State Stars, says he has seen a vast improvement in the form of Bafana Bafana and thinks they could go all the way at the Nations Cup.
“They looked very dangerous and when they did not have possession they quickly got behind the ball to make it difficult for us,” he said of the weekend defeat his Malawi side suffered at the hands of South Africa in Durban.
“I’m sure Gordon Igesund is a good coach and all the people in Malawi are supporting him and his team. We want them to get the cup this time, it’s been a long time for South Africa (since their previoustriumph in 1996).”
Phiri, who took Malawi to the 2010 Afcon tournament in Angola, said Igesund must stick to his plans and not deviate from his chosen strategy.
“The coach has just come in and has been looking at players. It is always difficult for any coach to come straight in and do well.
“Unfortunately for him he does not have too much time to start building but he’s doing the right thing. I’m sure he’ll come up with a solid team that will be able to win the Nations Cup,” added Phiri.
