Field for 2013 Africa Cup of Nations revealed following qualifiers

Cameroon will miss out on their second successive Nations Cup finals, while most of the usual suspects will be making their way to the southern tip of the continent

Cameroon were the major casualties on Sunday as the final field was determined for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in South Africa.

The indomitable Lions needed to overcome a 2-0 deficit against Cape Verde, but although they won their fixture 2-1, it is the islanders who celebrated their first-ever trip to the continental finals.

Cameroon welcomes back Samuel Eto’o was the international wilderness, but he could not inspire them to the finals and they will miss their second successive Nations Cup.

The only bright spark was a goal on debut for 16-year-old Fabrice Olinga, who is a product of the Samuel Eto’o Foundation and his strike was set up by his mentor.

South Africa, Zambia, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, Burkina Faso, Angola, Cape Verde, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia will be the competing nations come January, 2013.

Ethiopia qualified for their first finals since 1982, beating Sudan 2-0 to advance on the away goals rules, while Niger stunned Guinea with a 2-0 win in Niamey that saw them advance 2-1 on aggregate.

Burkina Faso needed a stoppage time goal from Alain Traore to secure a 3-1 win over Central African Republic to advance 3-2 on aggregate. The Burkinabe had been heading out on the away goals rule before Traore popped up with his second goal of the game.

Emmanuel Adebayor got the decisive goal for Togo as they eliminated Gabon 2-1 on the day and 3-2 on aggregate, while former Manchester United striker Manucho proved Angola’s hero with a two-goal blitz inside the first five minutes in Luanda as they beat Zimbabwe 2-0 at home to go through on the away goals rule.

DR Congo lost 2-1 in Equatorial Guinea but still advanced comfortably 5-2 on aggregate, while Algeria defeated north African rivals Libya 2-0 to secure a 3-0 victory in the tie.

On Saturday Ghana, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Tunisia and defending champions Zambia all qualified.

Cote d'Ivoire will likely join them after their match in Senegal was abandoned because of a crowd riot but this is still to be confirmed by the Confederation of African Football.
