Pirates booked their place in the group stages of the Caf Champions League with a 3-2 aggregate win over TP Mazembe in a match played in DRC on Sunday afternoon

Orlando Pirates are through to the group stages of the Caf Champions League despite suffering a 1-0 defeat to TP Mazembe in DRC on Sunday afternoon.

Pirates went into this game with a 3-1 lead from the first leg played at the Orlando Stadium over a fortnight ago and their opponents needed two unanswered goals to progress, but the PSL champions fought against all odds.

The 1995 Caf Champions League winners had to finish the game with 10-men after captain Lucky Lekgwathi was red carded earlier in the first half and the armband was given to Happy Jele to lead the team in the hostile conditions.

Senzo Meyiwa was a hero on the day and he had to come to rescue Pirates on two occasions, as he saved two of Mazembe’s penalties to ensure Bucs’ progress to the last eight of the competition for the first time since 2006.

The draw for the group stages of Africa’s biggest club competition will be conducted on May 7.
