Steve Bruce has revealed that he was in ‘a state of shock’ after Newcastle boss Alan Pardew headbutted Hull’s David Meyler in an astonishing touchline incident during Saturday's meeting between the two sides.
The controversial moment is likely to see Pardew once again grab the headlines for the wrong reasons and the former Sunderland boss admits that his counterpart may be in "serious trouble".
“I’ve never seen anything like that," admitted Bruce. "I would imagine that Alan will be in serious trouble. I’ve seen it before in dressing rooms and with your own players but I’ve never seen it from an opposition manager.
“There is no question that Alan led with his head and obviously lost it. He’ll look at himself later on and think 'what the hell have I done?'”
Bruce accepted Pardew’s apology on behalf of the club but added that the Magpies boss was fortunate with regards to Meyler's reaction.
“He's lucky that he didn't get one back. Then he would have been in trouble, a 25-year-old against a 50-year-old is a mismatch isn’t it?
“We accept his apology. David has accepted his apology. He’s lucky it was David. Another player may have rolled around on the floor. The reaction of David was terrific.
“We’re all in a state of shock. At the time, so was I. It is for Alan to live with. It is for Alan to deal with the consequences.”
On the game itself, Bruce maintained that the performance levels of his side did not reflect the outcome of the match, but admitted they were the masters of their own downfall.
“I thought we played fantastically well first half," he continued. "Krul has made two wonderful saves and within 30 seconds we were 1-0 down.
“We go and make a mistake that you’d see on a Sunday morning at the park pitch. We’ve prided ourselves defensively but we’ve made more mistakes today than I’ve seen us make in six months. When you play at this level, you can’t do that.“Collectively and individually, we’ve made bad schoolboy errors and basically just given them three goals. When you do that, it is always going to be difficult.”
