Arteta: Arsenal players know they are responsible for poor form

Arteta: Arsenal players know they are responsible for poor form

Latest Swansea boss Laudrup coy on future as Manchester City & Real Madrid rumours grow Previous

The 30-year-old believes you only have to look at the players' faces to see the 'disappointment and hurt', but is sure the club will be active in January if they need to be

Mikel Arteta has insisted that the Arsenal squad are "hurting" just as much as the fans after recent poor results, but will react positively to climb back up the Premier League table.

The Gunners are currently tenth in the league, some 15 points off the table toppers Manchester United, with the 2-0 defeat to Swansea in their last fixture sparking a supporters revolt against manager Arsene Wenger.

But the Spanish midfielder indicated that while his team-mates all share the pain of their followers, he is confident that they can provide a "big reaction" by working extra hard in training.

“People are hurting, people are upset with themselves, the players are angry," he told the Daily Mirror. "I think that’s a good thing. It’s not like players couldn’t care less, they know what they need to do.

“You look at the players’ faces, the disappointment, the hurt. They want to put it right. You’ve got players here demanding and wanting to do extra training.

“We have been watching videos over and over again of games, looking at what we’ve done wrong. That comes from everyone, absolutely everyone.

“You have to look at yourself and then you have to look at the rest of the players. The most important thing is a player’s attitude, how you go about your job and the players here take responsibility.

“We need to win games, it doesn’t matter how. The players want to put it right. I’m expecting a big reaction. I know we will get that from the players."

Two late goals from Michu handed the Swans victory at the Emirates last time out, in what was Arsenal's second home loss of the season already. The 30-year-old admitted everyone is concerned and suggested that the fans have a right to feel disappointed, but suggested that a strong start against West Brom could improve the atmosphere in north London.

“We need to start well, give the crowd a hand and something to cheer," he explained. "That will give them a lift and that’s so important."

“It’s so important for the crowd to get behind us. But we can’t expect them to get behind us unless we give them something that we want to watch.

“You feel that disappointment from the fans because they expect better. We need to turn it round as quickly as we can because we’ve got a good period around Christmas where we can create a different atmosphere, everyone’s happy on holiday and there’s a lot of games.

“I looked at the Swansea game and the confidence that we are going to win the game hasn’t been there at the moment.

“We have to change that. We have to realise that we’re a good team, we’ve got some good players and we have to make the Emirates a hard place to come.

“I’ve got a responsibility, we’ve all got a responsibility. We will try to help the younger players but, believe me, everyone is very concerned."

From a personal perspective, Arteta indicated that the team's struggles on the pitch are affecting him off it, while hinting that the boss may feel January transfer window action is necessary.

“Does it affect me? Ask my missus! I get very frustrated. I love my job, I want to do well and so when it goes badly it affects your personality,” the former Everton man continued.

“We’ve got everything here to be a really, really successful. We all know we can do better and when you feel that you get very frustrated.

“You can always add quality to any team. They can make a difference, bring in more spark and I’m sure they will do that if they feel they need to."
