Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, one of the founding fathers of the Association of European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL), has announced his decision to leave his position as CEO at the end of March.

The Portuguese lawyer has served as CEO of the EPFL, which acts as the umbrella body of 30 leagues and almost a thousand clubs across Europe, since June 2005. He has acted to promote the EPFL’s interests with FIFA, UEFA and other sports bodies or political institutions, such as the European Commission, European Parliament, Council of Europe and national governments and parliaments.

He said: “I will be forever bound to the EPFL, but I believe that enlightened leaders should not perpetuate themselves in office. My mission at the EPFL is accomplished. The time is right for me to move on, start a new cycle in my life and embrace new challenges.”

French Football League (LFP) president Frédéric Thiriez, who was recently elected as permanent chairman of the EPFL, added: “It takes great personalities to build a great organisation. Today the EPFL is a well-regarded and respected institution, and that has only been possible thanks to Emanuel’s professionalism and dedication.”
