Borussia Dortmund has entered into a partnership deal with Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei, with the agreement set to transform connectivity within the Bundesliga giant’s Signal Iduna Park.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Huawei will become a ‘champion partner’ of Dortmund – the club’s top commercial tier below that of main sponsors Evonik Industries, Signal Iduna and Puma. Huawei will install a complete WLAN infrastructure in Signal Iduna Park – a system that the company claims will be one of the biggest in Germany and unique in the European market. In addition to boosting signal reception for mobile devices, Dortmund will work with Huawei to create a foundation for delivering exclusive content, such as details of the team’s initial line-up, straight to fans’ mobile phones, well ahead of the kick-off.

Huawei’s full product range, including smart phones, tablets and mobile broadband devices, will be in service at Dortmund home games. Under the cooperation agreement, Huawei will have a VIP area, the Huawei Conference Center, at its disposal in the stadium’s north stand during home matches. Huawei will also be able to use the Conference Center to host seminars, business events and other activities on non-match days. In addition, the sponsorship package will include product placement and classic perimeter advertising. Lars-Christian Weisswange, Huawei’s executive vice-president of the consumer business group, said: “We’re delighted to be able to showcase our capabilities as a supplier of infrastructure and user devices in this reference project and to have found a sponsorship partner in Borussia Dortmund who is a competitive contender and who shares our belief in quality and performance, along with our unwavering resolve to be among the very best in the world.”

Carsten Cramer, Borussia Dortmund’s director of sales and marketing, added: “Huawei’s technical infrastructure for the wireless network in Signal Iduna Park will soon enable people to experience sport and entertainment in a whole new dimension. We’ll be able to offer all our fans access to internet services on site and to deliver exclusive content to them inside the stadium.”
