Borussia Dortmund has reported a net profit of Eur51.2 million for the 2012-13 season – its best ever financial results.

The German Bundesliga club, which came close to going out of business 10 years ago before restructuring the club and balancing its books, secured an 86% year-on-year rise in profit. Dortmund recorded a record turnover of Eur305 million, a 61.3% increase on the previous year.

Dortmund’s journey to the final of the 2013 UEFA Champions League, where the team lost 2-1 to German rival Bayern Munchen, helped to boost broadcast revenues to Eur88 million, up from Eur60 million the previous year. The club also generated Eur52 million from the sales of Mario Gotze and Ivan Perisic to Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg respectively, although player wages increased by 34% to Eur100 million for the 2013-14 season.

“We are growing very fast and have been very dynamic for years, and it is a great challenge to cope with inevitable organisational and structural adjustments,” Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said. “Above all, what is important here is the sustainability of sports development.”
