David Beckham has been declared the world’s wealthiest footballer in the inaugural Goal Rich List 2013, with the football website placing his net worth at £175 million.

Beckham, who recently joined French Ligue 1 giant Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), finished some £59.5 million ahead of his nearest rival, FIFA Ballon d’Or winner and FC Barcelona player Lionel Messi, who is estimated to be worth £115.5 million. Real Madrid midfielder and Ballon d’Or runner-up, Cristiano Ronaldo, finished in third place after being valued at £112 million.

The net worth of each player was calculated based on their salary, endorsements and assets, as well as outside business interests. Beckham was able to take the top spot, despite the fact he will not earn anything from his PSG contract in terms of salary, which is being donated to a children’s charity.

Goal.com’s top-five was rounded out by Real Madrid’s Kaka (£66.5 million) and his Brazilian compatriot Ronaldinho (£63 million), who now plies his trade for Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A club Atletico Mineiro. “The world’s top footballers can no longer be regarded as just athletes – they are top major international brands and David Beckham is the biggest brand of them all,” said Goal.com managing editor, Amar Singh. “Our findings show just how much wealth footballers are able to accumulate by leveraging this. Far from the bling-loving, sports car-collecting stereotypes, the vast majority of footballers on the Goal Rich List are putting their money to positive use by setting up charitable foundations or funding community initiatives.”
