Nigerians Abroad: Lukman Haruna scores in 9-1 demolition of Metalurh Donetsk

It was a lean week in Europe for Nigerians as players prepared to report to the Super Eagles camp for the match against Ethiopia

Peter Odemwingie scored his first league goal since January 19 on Saturday though Cardiff lost 2-1 at home to Newcastle.

The Nigerian recruit from West Brom pulled a goal back for the Bluebirds in the 54th minute of the encounter.

Odemwingie had dummied the advancing Tim Krul before scoring his first Premier League goal for his new club. Nicky Maynard then replaced him in the 81st minute.

Odemwingie successfully completed two dribbles, had 66% pass accuracy from 54 touches and won all his aerial duels. He also had one shot that was the only goal for Cardiff.

Mikel Obi was not in the Chelsea team that beat Norwich 3-1 on Sunday. The Nigerian has played four times, scoring one goal. Also Victor Anichebe was not listed for West Brom against Arsenal on Sunday. West Brom battled Arsenal to a 1-1 draw.

Sone Aluko had a quiet game against Aston Villa on Saturday. Though he had a high percentage in his passes, he failed to test Villa’s goalkeeper throughout the encounter. Aluko has played seven times with one goal and an assist.

Victor Moses played his fourth consecutive game for Liverpool on Saturday as they comfortably defeated Crystal Palace 3-1. The Nigerian had an opportunity to score his second league goal but his effort hit the cross bar. Moses was replaced by Luis Alberto in the 66th minute.

Vincent Enyeama is in the businees of keeping clean sheets these days in Ligue 1. He kept another clean sheet for Lille on Saturday as they won 3-0 at home to Ajaccio. It was Enyeama’s sixth clean sheet in nine league games and they are up to third in the league table with 17 points.

Enyeama made two saves in the match and had 78% pass accuracy as he touched the ball 22 times.


Lukman Haruna scored his third league goal on Sunday when Dynamo Kiev demolished Metalurh Donetsk 9-1. Haruna came on for Miguel Veloso in the 54th minute and scored his side’s sixth goal in the 67th minute.

His compatriot, Brown Ideye was not listed for the encounter as he is serving a suspension due to a red card he received last week against Vorskla. Haruna has now played 11 league matches, starting four of those matches. Ideye has scored once in seven league appearances.

Michael Babatunde played his seventh league game for Volyn on Sunday as they were held 0-0 away to Chornomorets. Babatunde played all 90 minutes of the encounter. The young winger has scored twice.


The recent bad form of CSKA Moscow in the league continued on Saturday as Ahmed Musa and his teammates lost 2-0 at home to Dynamo Moscow. Musa played all 90 minutes of the encounter. He has scored five goals in 12 league appearances.

Super Eagles invitee, Obinna Nsofor spent all 90 minutes on the bench for Locomotiv Moscow as they drew 2-2 away to Krylya Sovetov on Saturday. Nsofor has played just 52 minutes for the club this season.


There are still no goals for Emmanuel Emenike and Michael Eneramo in the Turkish league.

Emenike came on for Samuel Holmen in the 63rd minute as Fenerbahce were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Trabzonspor while Eneramo started for Besiktas in their 1-0 away win over Eskişehirspor. Omer Sismanoglu replaced Eneramo in the 63rd minute.

John Utaka played for 64 minutes before being substituted and the man that replaced him, Rafik Djebbour scored Sivasspor’s second goal for a 2-0 win over Gençlerbirliği on Sunday. Utaka has scored two goals in six appearances.

Godfrey Oboabona returned to the Rizespor bench after his cup exertions as his team lost 2-1 at home to Antalyaspor. Oboabona is yet to make his debut in the league.

Taye Taiwo played his seventh game for Bursaspor in their 1-0 away win over Karabükspor last Friday. Taiwo played all 90 minutes while his compatriot Joseph Akpala, making his debut was replaced after 43 minutes.


Nosa Igiebor played all 90 minutes for Real Betis on Sunday when they lost 3-1 away to Getafe. The Nigerian midfielder was shown a yellow card in the 90th minute. Igiebor has played six times in the league this season with one goal in his kitty.

Former U-20 captain, Ramon Azeez made another substitute appearance for Almeria on Sunday as they lost 2-1 away to Sevilla. Azeez came off the bench in the 59th minute to replace Marcos Tebar.

Villarreal returned to winning ways last Friday as they humbled Granada 3-0. Ikechukwu Uche was an unused substitute while Odion Ighalo came on for Granada in the 57th minute to replace Younnes El Arabi. Uche has scored once this season but ighalo is yet to open his account. 


Ogenyi Onazi played his fifth league game for Lazio on Sunday as they drew 0-0 at home to Fiorentina. Onazi scored in the Europa League on Thursday against Trabzonspor and started at the Olympic Stadium against Fiorentina. He was however substituted in the 81st minute by Alvaro Gonzalez.

Joel Obi continues his rehabilitation from injury as he was listed for Parma’s 3-1 win over Sassuolo on Sunday. Obi has played just 22 minutes for Parma this season on loan from Inter Milan.
