thumbnail Hello,

The Cameroon captain told his teammates in Yaounde he was bowing out of the outfit to take care of personal issues

Samuel Eto'o was reported to have announced his retirement from the Cameroon team moments after the Indomitable Lions booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers following their 1-0 victory against Libya in Yaounde on Sunday.

“I want to thank you all for your support, but I regret to announce my retirement from the team to solve personal issues,” Eto’o was quoted to have told his team-mates by L’Equipe.

The 32-year-old, who recently joined Chelsea from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, was substituted in the second half after sustaining an injury.

Cameroon coach Volker Finke refused to comment on the news during the post-match press conference.

Eto’o and the German manager had clashed moments before the match due to a difference in opinion about the choice of players.

Sources close to the technical staff said Finke did not tolerate his captain Eto’o imposing the use of two players - Achille Webo and Carlos Kameni.

Normalcy resumed after the intervention of officials from the Cameroon Football Federation and the national team is now through to the playoff stage of qualification for the 2014 World Cup.
