thumbnail Hello,

Outgoing Warriors coach Klaus-Dieter Pagels has dropped the injured duo of defender Felix Chindungwe and Nicholas Alifandika

The duo are missing from the Zimbabwe squad to face Mauritius in the first round, first leg of the 2014 Chan qualifiers this weekend.

Chindungwe and midfielder Alifandika were part of the 20-man squad that was in Zambia for the Cosafa Cup where Zimbabwe finished as runners-up to the hosts.

With one of the reserve goalkeepers Munyaradzi Diya and Partson Jaure going to be sacrificed, only one player would be called in to replace Chindungwe.

Dynamos defender Partson Jaure is likely to step in for Chindungwe. The travelling squad is expected to be announced on Wednesday, a day before Zimbabwe fly to Port Louis.

“We will call in just one player to replace Felix but we have not made that choice this moment,” Pagels told Goal in Harare.

“The goalkeeper coach (Nkululeko Dhlamini) will choose which goalkeeper to be dropped and he has not yet furnished me on that issue. Our options are very limited because we are only allowed to call two players per club.”

The Port Louis battle would be Pagels’ last match in charge of the Warriors before he goes back to his native Germany to take up a sports teaching job at a school in his hometown of Stade.

The second leg is slated for 11 August in Harare. If they sail past Mauritius, the 2013 Cosafa Cup losing finalists are likely to face old foes Zambia again in the final qualifying round.

Zambia, however, would have to overcome Botswana to reach that stage and Zimbabwe would love to meet their northern neighbours to bury the agony of surrendering their record Cosafa title to them.

“I would love to return from Mauritius with the team carrying a healthy lead so that the job would be easy for the incoming coach,” Pagels said.

Ian Gorowa is widely tipped to assume the reigns from Pagels. Zimbabwe are seeking a third appearance and make an impression at the Chan tournament to be hosted by South Africa. Only players plying their trade in their respective countries are eligible for Chan.
