Chipolopolo secured the Cosafa Cup title with a 2-0 victory over defending champions Zimbabwe at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday afternoon
Zambia were on the forefront in the 4th minute with a beautiful curler from Alex N’gonga who beat Nyamupanedengu in the far post.
The home side nearly doubled their lead a few minutes later when Bornwell Mwape’s header came off the crossbar with the Zimbabwean keeper well beaten.
The Warriors nearly equalized towards the half-hour mark when Last Chibwiro’s well taken shot was parried over the bar for a corner by the Zambian shot-stopper Danny Munyau.
Chipolopolo could not increase their lead despite a lion share of possession in the first 45 minutes as the referee blew for half time.
Both teams were comfortable on the ball in the early stages of the second half, but failed to create any clear goalscoring opportunities.
Substitute Ronald Chitiyo came close in the 69th minute, but his powerful header was brilliantly saved the Zambian keeper Munyau.
The hosts gave their opponents no space to penetrate, and often pressed them in their own half.
Zambia should have wrapped up the game with five minutes remaining when Moses Phiri entered the Zimbabwean penalty area, only to be let down by his final touch.
However, Chipolopolo doubled their lead in stoppage time through Kabasa Chongo to secure their 4th Cosafa Cup title against the same side that beat them in the final of the same tournament back in 2009.
