The local Fennec Foxes will not be participating in the CHAN 2014 qualifying after Algerian football officials dissolved the squad due to poor standards
The Algeria Football Federation has pulled its team from the upcoming qualifiers of the CHAN 2014 for being unable to produce a competitive squad to participate in the tournament.
The local Fennec Foxes were supposed to take on Libya next weekend in the North Zone first round, while Tunisia are to host Morocco.
The decision of the Algerian FA has fuelled suspicions within the region, with several newspapers suggesting that Algeria’s withdrawal is not unconnected to fear of insecurity in Libya, and a bid to score lower points in Fifa ranking to possibly avoid Egypt in the 2014 World Cup seeding for the third round qualifying.
However, the body’s secretariat says its team simply withdrew because of poor standards and nothing else.
South Africa will host the 2014 African Nations Championship.
