Libya 2-0 Togo

Libya defeated Togo 2-0 on Friday in Tripoli in the fifth match day of the 2014 World Cup qualifying second round to strengthen their lead in Group I to 9 points ahead of the group’s other encounter between second placed Cameroon (6pts) and DR Congo (5pts) scheduled for Sunday.

Weakened by the absence of two key players Alaixys Romao and Jonathan Ayite, who declined to travel to the North African country for fear of insecurity, Togo were unable to suck the intense pressure from the home side during first half, who completely disorganised the visitors’ defence and midfield, as well as the entire composure of the West Africans.

Togo’s first defensive blunder came early in the 7th minute when Gaffar Mamah tried to deflect a long Libyan cross inside the box, with the ball ricocheting off his right arm and resulting in a penalty transformed by Faisal Saleh.

The Sparrow Hawks had issues compounded 10 minutes later when midfielder Komlan Amewou of French side Nime, pressed by two Libyans, went for a ball contention in the air and was surprised to find his header inside their own net to gift the hosts a double only after 18 minutes.

The Togolese gradually recovered and began to find their feet in the second half but could not overturn the deficit before final whistle, putting an end to their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.
