thumbnail Hello,

The former Pharaoh forward, famous for his goals at Tottenham, announced his retirement on his official twitter on Tuesday

Egypt striker Ahmed Hossam 'Mido' has retired from playing football at a relatively young age of 30. Mido struggled to get into English club Charlton's team and left the side in January to discover new pastures.

After struggling to find a club, the Egyptian has decided to call it a day.

"Today I announce that I'm quitting football. I want to thank all those who supported me during my football career, especially Egypt fans," Mido wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

He was most famed for scoring 13 goals for Spurs during the 2005-06 season. His stock rose but then found himself in training ground disciplinary incidents that also saw him lose his place in Egypt's national side on a number of occasions.

In 2004 Mido had initially damaged his reputation by pretending to be unavailable through injury, but represented Roma a day later. After being forgiven, two years later Mido fell-out with coach Hassan Shehata during the 2006 Afcon semi final against Senegal. He would later be suspended and welcomed back to the national team again, until he was eventually dropped in 2007.

Mido went on to more loan moves with Middlesborough, Wigan, West Ham, Ajax and Barnsley. However each was short stayed, particularly at West Ham when he was criticized along with South Africa's Benni McCarthy for not giving 100 percent in training and rehabilitation between injuries.

Even though McCarthy would return to South Africa with Pirates, winning the treble, Mido also struggled back at Zamalek in Egypt, where he couldn't get back to his goalscoring form. Continuous injury and fitness problems has resulted in Mido retiring a week after 35-year-old South African legend McCarthy.

Before joining Spurs, the Egyptian was most prolific at Ajax Amsterdam, and with mixed success at Marseille and a failed stint with Roma. He scored 20 goals for the Egypt national team.
