Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) on Thursday turned down the list of players submitted by coach Jean-Paul Akono for their World Cup qualifier against Togo on June 9 in Lome.
No reasons were given for the decision, however, a source at the body said a new coach would be announced very shortly and would most probably be the one to draw the list of players for the forthcoming match.
“I’m still at my post, so I had the right and responsibility to prepare my list for the match against Togo,” Akono told reporters in Yaounde on Thursday.
“Nobody has told me I can longer call up players for games. The invitation of candidates for the post does not hinder the continuity of the job.”
More than 100 coaches have submitted CVs for the job, as a number of Cameroon former internationals denounce moves to recruit a foreign manager, which they say is a waste of money.
Cameroon are leaders of Group I with six points ahead of Libya, five points, DR Congo, four points, and Togo, one.
