The Elephants captain will not be playing with his side during the 2014 World Cup qualifier against the Scorpions next weekend in Abidjan
Cote D’Ivoire coach Sabri Lamouchi did not include the name of his captain Didier Drogba on the list of players called up to face Gambia on March 23 in the 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifying.
The 34-year-old former Chelsea striker, who recently joined Turkish club Galatasaray, was widely blamed for the Elephants’ poor run at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, but the French coach said that was not the reason why he was dropped.
Drogba’s former mate at Chelsea Salomon Kalou, who now plays for French Ligue 1 side Lille, was not invited as well. However, CSKA Moscow forward Seydou Doumbia, who did not participate at the 2013 Afcon, makes a comeback.
Gerard Gohou Bi Goua of Turkish club Kayseri Erciyesspor joins the team for the first time.
The list also includes four home-based players.
Cote d’Ivoire are leading Group C with four points, one ahead of Tanzania, followed by Morocco on three, with bottom-placed Gambia having one.
