thumbnail Hello,

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has dismissed a complaint from the Ivorian FA former chief against Caf over the rejection of his bid to run for the body’s presidency

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected an appeal filed by Jacques Anouma against Caf regarding his candidacy for the body’s presidency.

The former Cote D’Ivoire football federation president had his candidature for Caf’s upcoming presidential election rejected on the ground that he was not and had never been a member of the body’s Executive Committee – a new requirement for all aspirants adopted last September in Seychelles.

The 59-year-old accountant had vowed to fight on by taking the matter to the Cas, which has seemingly put an end to his bid, leaving incumbent president Issa Hayatou the sole candidate on board for the March 10 vote in Morocco.

Cas has confirmed the new statues and said they were applicable in assessing the validity of the candidates in the presidential election and that Anouma did not meet these criteria because he had never been a member the Caf Executive Committee.

Critics across the continent believe the new regulations were directed against strong challengers like Anouma to smooth the path for Hayatou’s reelection, after 26 years at the helm of the continent’s football governing body.

Hayatou told France 24 last week he would not run for another term if he was elected.
