Caf boss Issa Hayatou only candidate on course for presidency

Caf’s incumbent president is set to succeed himself after the election commission validated his candidature and rejected that from main challenger Jacques Anouma

Caf Election Commission on Tuesday announced that incumbent president Issa Hayatou is the only official candidate for its presidential election set for March 2013 in Morocco.

The commission on Tuesday rejected the candidature of Jacques Anouma, widely considered as Hayatou’s strongest challenger.

The commission said it turned down the bid of the former Ivorian FA chairman on the basis of new election laws adopted last September requiring all aspirants for Caf’s presidency to be a voting member of the Executive Committee (EC).

Anouma is not, but sits in the EC by virtue of his membership of Fifa Executive Committee.

Cameroon football federation (Fecafoot) has saluted Hayatou’s candidature and pledged its support to the 66-year-old former athlete, who has ruled the Africa football body since 1987.

The Ivorian FA has condemned the rejection of its candidate while Anouma’s collaborators say he is planning to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), which last week discarded a request from Liberia football federation to suspend the new amendment introduced by Algeria football federation.
